In writing about franchises lately, I have uncovered some very interesting details. I am not into pitches at all, but it would seem commonplace among the people who try to promote the franchise as being some type of magic button. As any true business professional would know, there is simply no magic button that can be pushed for success. Anything of value must be fully worked on a regular basis, to make any kind of substantial income for long term growth and prosperity. The franchise is no different, and as a point of fact, I begin to wonder after my research, exactly why anyone would lay out big money to become involved in what looks like to me, a business model that will be far more rigorous to build, than just having a conventional job.

The facts are very clear at this point is that when a franchise is purchased from any of the major players, a standard work week could entail as much as, or exceeding, eighty hour s per week. Personally, I find this amazing that someone would actually buy a job, and then have to put in those types of hours just to bring in money to live.

In researching franchises on Google, it becomes very apparent that the information is rich, but can be quite confusing as well. It would seem that authority sites listed, like FTC.GOV, do provide needed information and insights about the legalities of franchising. Much of the other information seems to be rather obscure, hard to sift and sort through, and is once again indicative of having to literally wade through tons of bad information, to find the good stuff. It can be seen readily that if one were trying to find out how to start a franchising business of any kind, the sources on the big search engine will require some time, effort and diligence. For most, the part of conducting research might better be left to the experts. Once again, where does one find such experts in the field of franchising? One would think that substantial law firms which deal directly with franchises would be the logical place to begin.

Perhaps this is a positive note as any franchise prospect would need to be intelligent, proactive towards their business model, and should be prepared to do whatever is necessary to succeed. Obviously, franchise businesses may not be for everyone who desires to find a job alternative. It takes a special type of individual to make it in business today. The far gone now mom and pop stores of yesterday have been replaced with nationally and internationally branded business models that make it all but impossible to survive in today's dwindling economy.

Building a business takes time, effort and dogged determination to make it succeed. The franchising industry is looking up in 2012 after several rough post-recession years of tight credit and weak consumer spending.

Franchisees -– entrepreneurs who own and operate branches of chain businesses such as McDonald’s, Hampton Inns and Suites and H&R Block -– support 12% of the country’s private sector, according to the International Franchise Association. The group anticipates improvement in franchised industries including retail, real estate and personal services.

Although the expected rate of growth is still below what it was before the recession, jobs at franchised location are expected to grow 2.1% in 2012 to 8.1 million positions. About half of those workers will be employed at restaurant franchises.

The number of establishments will rise 1.9% to 749,500 units and revenue will boom 5% to $782 billion. Franchise businesses account for 3% of the country’s gross domestic product, according to the association.

But there are still plenty of hang-ups. Franchisees and franchisers -– the chain companies that recruit the entrepreneurs –- say they’re frustrated with the slow economic recovery, a lukewarm welcome for small businesses in Washington and rising prices for commodities.

Access to credit has not’t improved, according to two-thirds of franchisers and nearly half of franchisees. Eight in 10 franchisers and more than half of franchisees say stingy lenders have limited their ability to expand. Still, 85% of franchisers say they’ll increase the number of locations anyway, and more than three-quarters anticipate an increase in consumer sales. Franchisees, though, are a little less optimistic.
